Dr. Joy Song began playing the piano because of her love for music, but as a child, she often considered quitting.
“Did you hear me? Remember to keep the left hand softer!”
“Keep those fingers firm!"
When Dr. Song became a teacher, she sought ways to make the learning process easier, faster, and more enjoyable, which led to the birth of the Icons—fun images like frogs, eagles, and fish that embody and communicate musical and technical concepts. Each icon, while simple in appearance, integrates her understanding of psychology, educational philosophy, pedagogy, anatomy, and physiology.
Dr. Song is the founder and director of the Korean Institute of Piano Pedagogy (KIPP), where she continues to innovate, finding new and enjoyable ways for students to learn to play the piano with imagination, musicality, and proper physical technique.
